The trick is to book the tour in advance
I've tried to enter the Accademia Gallery in Florence once before. But the lines in front of the ticket offices were so long that I gave up after a while. This time I did what I should've done earlier: I booked a ticket to the Accademia in advance. The offer also included a guided tour, so I was very pleased with my choice. It was so cool to see all the unfinished statues by Michelangelo.
The most famous David in the world!
Since my name is David, I just had to see the most famous David in the world. I'm so glad I visited the Accademia Gallery, because this 17-foot-high marble statue is incredible. Also, I learned so much from Giuliano, our tour guide, who spoke pretty decent English. I highly recommend the Accademia Gallery Tour to everyone, even if you're not named David!

HALL OF THE COLOSSUS
When you enter the gallery, the first room you will visit on this tour is the Hall of the Colossus. The central piece of the room is the marble sculpture named 'Rape of the Sabine Women', which depicts three figures carved from just one block of marble. It was made by Giambologna, a Flemish sculptor inspired by Michelangelo, at the end of the 16th century. There are also examples of altarpieces from the 15th century onward. They are lined chronologically to show the development of the Florentine school. They feature works by Pietro Perugino, Filippino Lippi, and Raffaellino del Garbo.
THE HALL OF THE PRISONERS
Next on your Accademia Gallery Tour is the Hall of the Prisoners. This part of the gallery is devoted to Michelangelo's works, which were left unfinished by the master. There are four statues of slaves carved in blocks of marble. They are presented in various stages of completion. Some experts say that Michelangelo intentionally left these statues incomplete to express the eternal struggle of human beings for freedom. Michelangelo's career, life, and art are fascinating topics, and your expert guide will tell you much more about them during the Accademia Gallery Tour.
DAVID - THE MOST FAMOUS STATUE IN THE WORLD
During this tour, you will see the most famous statue in the world, Michelangelo's David. At 5.17 meters tall, this marble masterpiece has its own hall. The statue was commissioned by the Republic of Florence because of its symbolism. In confronting their enemies, they saw themselves as David against Goliath. The statue was supposed to decorate the rooftop of Florence Cathedral. Instead, it was placed on the 'Piazza della Signoria' square in 1504, where it remained for nearly four centuries. During the 19th century, there was a consensus among art historians and city magistrates that David should be properly housed. They wanted to put him inside the gallery of the Academy of Fine Arts, but there was not enough space. A decision was made to build the Tribune Hall, in which the statue of David was finally placed in 1882! This Galleria Dell'Accademia Tour allows you to come near and admire the fine details of the statue. Notice his facial expression and his determined and daring glare. What did Michelangelo try to express? You will find answers to that and many other intriguing questions during your Accademia Gallery guided tour.
FLORENTINE GOTHIC AND RENAISSANCE PAINTINGS
During this Accademia Gallery Tour, you will be guided through three different rooms that feature altarpieces from the most important churches and monasteries in medieval Florence. Dating all the way back from the 13th century onward, these altarpieces are all gold-backed and painted on wood panels. The largest of them is the 'Tree of Life' by Pacino di Bonaguida, which dates to the early 14th century. It's a complex painting depicting Christ crucified on a tree-shaped cross. Next is the Giottesque Room, which houses works by the followers of Giotto, a painter often credited as being the father of Renaissance art. The third and final room, named 'The Orcagna Room', features work made by the 'di Cione' brothers. Who were they, and why were they famous? Find out on the Accademia Gallery Tour from an expert guide! The tour also includes skip-the-line tickets, leaving you more time to explore these wonderful masterpieces.

Interesting Facts
Accademia Gallery - Built on the ancient hospital
The name "Accademia" comes from the Italian word for "academy" or "school." This site, now one of Florence's famous museums, was built on the grounds of the Hospital of Saint Matthew and the Convent of Saint Niccolò. In 1748, Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo transformed it into a teaching facility for the nearby Academy of Fine Arts, hence the name Accademia.
Not only sculptures and paintings
While the Accademia Gallery is renowned for its sculptures and paintings, it also houses a fascinating collection of historical musical instruments. This section includes about fifty instruments, once owned by the Cherubini Conservatory and the Medici family. Visitors can see cellos, violins, violas, pianos, and more, and even listen to recordings of these instruments on available computers.
There is another David sculpture in Florence?
Yes, the Accademia Gallery in Florence is home to Michelangelo's original David statue. However, a replica, created in the 19th century to protect the original from weather damage, stands in Piazza della Signoria.
The Heart of Florence’s Artistic Trio
The Galleria dell’Accademia is one of three key landmarks that define Florence’s artistic identity. Together with the Uffizi Gallery and the Florence Cathedral (Duomo), it forms a symbolic trio of sculpture, painting, and architecture, all within walking distance of each other. To make the most of your visit, many travelers book an Uffizi Gallery Tour and get a ticket to climb the Duomo Florence in advance, as these iconic sites are among the most visited in the city and often sell out quickly.
