On our trip to Italy, we wanted to see as many UNESCO World Heritage Sites as we could. We chose the Tuscany day trip from Florence because it took us to see three of them! We saw the historic centers of Siena and San Gimignano, and the famous Leaning Tower in Pisa. We also had a delicious homemade pasta lunch paired with a lovely glass of Chianti wine. We had a wonderful time, and our bucket list is now three sites shorter.

SIENA – THE HISTORIC CENTER
The first stop on your tour is a visit to Siena, one of the most beautiful medieval towns in all of Europe. The entire center of Siena is declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and many who see it say it is completely justified. Your guide will take you on a walking tour through the center and a visit to the Siena Cathedral (Duomo di Siena). Duomo di Siena is a Gothic-style medieval cathedral with an impressive black and white marble facade. Cosimo III de' Medici, the Grand Duke of Tuscany, issued an edict in 1716 that officially recognized the boundaries of the Chianti district.
SAN GIMIGNANO – MEDIEVAL SKYSCRAPERS
As a part of this tour, your guide will take you through the incredibly preserved hilltop town of San Gimignano. Although small in size, it has some amazing attractions that are worth the visit. Famous for its stone towers that overlook the town, it has a unique skyline. The tallest among them is the "Torre Grossa", which stands at 54 meters (177 feet). Another famous structure is nearby, the "Duomo di San Gimignano". Its interior is decorated with Renaissance frescoes painted by many different painters of the era. Not surprisingly, the historic center of San Gimignano is on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list. Did you know that the town was named after an early Christian bishop, Saint Geminianus? During the invasions of Attila's Huns in the 5th century AD, the people of Tuscany believed it was due to his miracles that the region was spared.
PISA – THE ICONIC LEANING TOWER
A tour of Tuscany wouldn't be complete without a visit to the iconic "Leaning Tower of Pisa". Follow your guide across "Piazza del Duomo," more commonly known as "Piazza dei Miracoli", or the "Square of Miracles". Named so by the famous Italian poet Gabriele d'Annunzio because of its miraculous beauty and harmonious architecture, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. While you take a stroll around the Piazza, you will learn much more about the history of Pisa from your expert guide. Before you leave, don't forget to snap a photo of the "Leaning Tower"! Etruscans in Tuscany?
As you can probably tell from the similarities between the two words, Tuscany owes its name to the Etruscans. These ancient people are considered to be indigenous in what is now Tuscany. It is astonishing to compare the borders of ancient Etruria to today's Tuscany - they're almost identical, even though 3000 years have passed! By the 7th century BC, they had already established a civilization and formed a confederation of city-states. They benefited from trading links with the Celts in the north and the Greeks in the south. Trade brought in wealth as well as new ideas, engineering, and building techniques. For example, their alphabet was a derivation of the Greek alphabet. However, the Etruscans are credited with some of their own innovations: terra-cotta roof tiles, the chariot, gladiatorial games, the toga, and many more.
One of their biggest achievements that left a permanent mark on Tuscany was the introduction of grapes and winemaking! Who knows if there would be delicious Chianti wine today if it weren't for Etruscans?! Another interesting fact is that almost all of the towns in Tuscany were founded and named by them as well, including Pisa (Pisna), Siena (Saena), and Florence (Firez). Even San Gimignano was, in fact, an Etruscan village! They preferred to build hilltop settlements, as those were easier to defend. A perfect example that you'll get to see on this day tour is the town of San Gimignano. In conclusion, the Etruscans had a highly complex civilization that predated the Roman Empire by centuries.
