There’s something here for everyone!
Personally, I enjoy Renaissance artwork, but my husband is more of a modern lover. Palazzo Pitti was perfect for us. While I spent hours in the Palatine Gallery, he was in the Gallery of Modern Art all day long. The museum really caters to all types of art lovers and has works from multiple periods - I really appreciate that!
The Palazzo Pitti tickets are great value for money!
We entered the Pitti Palace at around noon, and we stayed until the place closed. The museum is HUGE, and you can easily spend the entire day there - which is what we did. I’m so glad we got these tickets, because you can stay inside for as long as you want. Because of this, we saw absolutely everything we wanted to see.

ENJOY THE PALATINE GALLERY
Start your Pitti Palace visit on the first floor - with the gorgeous Palatine Gallery. This was the famous Medici family’s private art collection, and you’ll see works of art dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. Among other renowned painters, you’ll see works by Raphael, Caravaggio, Titian, Pietro da Cortona and Rubens. However, perhaps the most famous painting is Perugino’s beautiful "Lamentation over the Dead Christ". Here, multiple figures are shown crowded over Christ’s dead body, mourning his untimely, unfortunate death.
SEE MODERN ITALIAN ART
Ascend to the second floor of the Gallery of Modern Art - here, you’ll find Italian paintings and sculptures dating from the late 18th century to World War I. Particularly stunning are the Macchiaioli paintings: a school of painting considered the predecessor of Impressionism. Be sure to see Giovanni Fattori’s "The Italian Camp at the Battle of Magenta". Fattori was the leader of the Macchiaioli movement, and this painting is an exquisite example of the typical Macchiaioli emphasis on light, shade, and color.
EXPLORE A DIFFERENT TYPE OF ART: THE COSTUME GALLERY
For a completely unique art experience, head to the Palazzina della Meridiana wing. There, you’ll find the Costume Gallery: the only museum in Italy showcasing Italian fashions. The gallery hosts theatrical costumes (from the 16th century onwards), historical garments (from the 18th century onwards), and mid-20th-century costume jewelry. All the clothes exhibited are absolutely lovely, exquisitely detailed, and completely different from anything you’d see today. Just compare the clothes to modern-day outfits - you’ll be blown away!
LEAVE THE PALACE FULL OF MEMORIES
Once you’ve seen all the artwork the museum has to offer, head outside. Why not then grab a bite to eat? Ditta Artigianale is perfect for an afternoon snack, and Trattoria La Casalinga serves traditional, delicious Tuscan food. They’re both less than 5 minutes away! Or, plan ahead and book a Florence Food Tour to enjoy a guided tasting of the city’s most authentic bites and culinary stories.

Do you know who originally commissioned the Pitti Palace?
It wasn’t the Medici family. It was Luca Pitti - an affluent baker who wanted a home as impressive as the Medici’s. He even allegedly ordered the Pitti Palace windows to be larger than the Medici doorway. However, in 1472 Pitti died with the building unfinished. Then, in 1549, the palace was sold to none other than Eleonora di Toledo, the wife of Cosimo I de' Medici.
