We saved so much time with this Accademia Gallery ticket!

The line to enter the art museum was insane…I’m so happy we had these Galleria dell Accademia tickets pre-booked! We just walked up to the booth, showed our entrance ticket, and could enter immediately. But if we had to wait in line…we would have lost a good chunk of the day!

Andrew
My favorite gallery so far!

I’m a huge art lover, so I’ve visited many art museums in my life. But this one is definitely my favorite! Michelangelo is just unmatched! I was so excited to see the famous sculpture of David and get as close as possible to it. Our guide told us that the museum staff are very strict about getting close to the sculpture because someone once damaged David’s left foot with a hammer! Who would do that?! I enjoyed the other paintings, of course, but seeing the statue of David was the main reason I came.

ENJOY THE MICHELANGELO COLLECTION

Michelangelo is considered a master of High Renaissance artwork - and you’ll view works in the Accademia Gallery Museum! His famous sculpture “David” is a must-see. It’s the first colossal marble sculpture made in the early modern period and was a major influence on all sculptures afterward. But make sure you also find Michelangelo’s St. Matthew, a carving of one of Christ’s apostles, and his four Prisoners statues. Although they’re all unfinished, the intricate workmanship will still take your breath away.

FROM BARTOLINI TO BOTTICELLI: A JOURNEY THROUGH ARTWORKS

Inside this academy of fine arts, you’ll also see countless paintings and sculptures by famous Florentine artists, such as Bartolini, Botticelli, Ghirlandaio, Giambologna, and more. For example, the stunning original plaster model of the Rape of the Sabine Women. Another notable example is Bartolini’s stunning Arnina sculpture. Paintings-wise, Botticelli’s Virgin and Child with the Young St John Baptist and Two Angels and Ghirlandaio Saints Stephen, James the Great, and Peter are the stand-outs. Whatever way you look, there’s gorgeous artwork, and you’ll surely find something you love.

COLLECTION OF OLD INSTRUMENTS

Your Galleria dell'Accademia Tickets also provide access to a special type of exhibition: a museum of musical instruments! Acquired from the Cherubini Conservatory’s Department of Musical Instruments, these medieval instruments provide a history of music from the 17th to the 19th century. You’ll see exquisite hand-crafted instruments made by masters such as Stradivarius, Bartolomeo Cristofori, and Niccolo Amati. The collection’s gems are Stradivarius’s tenor viola and violoncello - both made for the grand prince Ferdinando de’ Medici.

Do you know what the oldest art school building in Europe is?

You guessed it - the Accademia Gallery Museum! Originally founded in 1563 as the "Accademia delle Arti del Disegno", this building's mission was to educate and inspire artists. Over the years, its role evolved into an institution that not only teaches but also preserves and displays art. Today, more than 460 years later, the Accademia Gallery Museum is proudly recognized as Europe’s oldest art school building.

While the Accademia Gallery is famous for Michelangelo’s David, it’s also home to a remarkable collection of historical musical instruments, once owned by the Medici family. This unique section often surprises visitors with rare violins, early pianos, and Stradivari pieces.

Florence is filled with cultural treasures, and the Accademia is just one of many world-class museums worth exploring. If you plan to visit several of them, consider getting the Museum Pass Florence, as it’s a great way to save time and access top museums like the Uffizi Gallery, Pitti Palace, and more, all with one ticket.
