This was a great tour of the Duomo! The highlight of the tour was definitely the dome climb. The view from up there was just stunning. THE SYMBOL OF FLORENCE – THE DUOMO
Meet your guide at Piazza del Duomo. They will show you around, and you will first visit the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore or Lady of the Flower, known as the Duomo. It was the biggest church when it was built in the 15th century. Its name alludes to the city's name, which used to be Colonia Florentia or "Flowering Colony". Its outer walls are covered in green, white, and red marble and adorned with flowers and geometric figures. Inside, you can see a portrait of Dante Alighieri, as well as many sculptures and beautiful stained glass windows.
THE BAPTISTERY OF ST. JOHN
Next, you will visit the Baptistery of St. John, a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture, called by Dante "My St. John, the beautiful". It was consecrated in 1059! Its striking walls are covered in green and white marble and feature geometric designs. The interior walls are decorated with mosaics from the 13th and 14th centuries. The decoration on the floor resembles carpets and it was made in the 13th century, inspired by the Middle East.
ART SPANNING 700 YEARS
The Opera del Duomo Museum features works of art that span more than 700 years of history! You can see Ghiberti's work “Gates of Paradise”, which features ten panels with reliefs from the Old Testament. It is among the greatest works of Early Renaissance sculpture. See Giotto's painting "Madonna of San Giorgio alla Costa" from 1295, which was damaged in a terrorist bombing by the Mafia in 1993. It was restored, but a splinter was left in the chest of an angel as a reminder and a warning. See works by Donatello and Michelangelo, such as his sculpture "Pietà Bandini".

Brunelleschi's Dome - Architectural Revolution
The dome, built in the 15th century, remains the largest masonry vault in the world – an incredible achievement for its time.
Filippo Brunelleschi, the architect who designed the dome, was a fascinating figure. He won the commission for the construction even though he wasn't a trained architect but a goldsmith and a sculptor. However, he convinced the city magistrates that he had the knowledge to construct the biggest dome in the world. Not only that but it would be built without the usual supporting pillars, as was the norm at the time. This was considered impossible with the available technology.
But during his career, Brunelleschi spent a lot of time in Rome studying the Pantheon. As the ancient Romans used bricks and mortar to build it, this gave him the idea to try to do the same in Florence. And it worked! The authorities and the citizens of Florence were amazed by this achievement. As a result, their city became the most renowned in all of Italy. In fact, many experts date the beginning of the Renaissance to 1436, when the dome was completed. Unfortunately, we can't say for sure how the dome was planned because Brunelleschi left no blueprints or drawings. To commemorate his death, the grateful citizens, to this day, hold a parade on the anniversary of his death. If you find yourself in Florence on the 15th of April, don't miss this event!
