Finally visited the magical Cinque Terre!
If I had to describe Cinque Terre in one word, that would be magical! Wherever you look, it looks like a picture from a postcard. Our guide was knowledgeable and spoke good English. In each of the villages, we had free time to explore and try out the local cuisine. We especially loved the anchovies and their dry white wine, called Sciacchetra.

After spending an entire day exploring the Cinque Terre, I can safely say it was one of the best tours I've ever been on! Professionally guided, with a clear itinerary and all the necessary tickets included in the price. I didn't have to worry about anything; I just enjoyed it. LA SPEZIA - THE GATEWAY TO CINQUE TERRE
After boarding a Cinque Terre day trip from Florence, the port city of La Spezia is the first stop. During the 2-hour bus drive, your tour guide will give you an insightful introduction to the history of the coastal villages you are about to explore. From La Spezia, you will be boarding a train that will take you to the first of these villages, Manarola.
MANAROLA - A MILLENNIUM OF WINEMAKING
After arriving in Manarola, you will join a short guided tour of some of the vineyards planted on steep terraces. Also, there will be some free time for you to explore at your own pace. Did you know that Manarola has a millennium-long tradition of growing white grapes? Their famous dry white wine is called Sciacchetra, so be sure to try some!
CORNIGLIA - DIFFERENT FROM THE REST
Next on your guided tour is the village of Corniglia, the only one in Cinque Terre that is not on the coast. Situated atop a hill, you have the option to take the bus or climb the steps to reach its center. Once you explore this quaint village, you have the option to go on a guided hike to Vernazza. If you don't feel like hiking, follow your guide and take the train instead.
VERNAZZA - NESTLED AMONG THE CLIFFS
You will certainly notice by now that the train ride itself is a special experience. Built shortly after the Italian unification in the 1870s, it was (and still is) an engineering masterpiece. Snaking along the coastline and passing through multiple tunnels, you will next arrive at Vernazza. With its houses and buildings nestled into the cliffs, Vernazza is rightly considered to be one of the most beautiful villages in Italy! Also, don't miss the chance to visit the imposing watchtower of Belforte, then follow your tour guide to Monterosso!
MONTEROSSO - THE BIRTHPLACE OF PESTO SAUCE
Your guide will show you around this picturesque village, which is the birthplace of the famous pesto sauce. Made from olive oil, pine nuts, fresh basil, freshly grated parmesan cheese, and sea salt, it is served in all of Monterosso's restaurants. Monterosso is also known as having the biggest beach in Cinque Terre. So, take a seat and enjoy Pesto Gnocchi, or head to the Fegina beach and take a swim!
RIOMAGGIORE - A PANORAMIC FERRY RIDE
You will arrive in Riomaggiore from Monterosso by ferry. While on the ferry, enjoy the opportunity to marvel at the panoramic view of Cinque Terre. Did you know that, due to their isolation, each village developed its own dialect? Riomaggiore is an ancient fishing village known for its salted anchovies, so be sure to try some! After exploring, board the train back to La Spezia, and then take the bus back to Florence.

Watch out! The pirates are coming!
During medieval times, the coast of what is now known as the Italian Riviera was ravaged by pirate attacks. These pirates were largely Saracen and came from North Africa. For centuries, they were cruising the Italian coast, pillaging and looting. Life was truly difficult for the people who lived near the sea. As a consequence, some coastal towns and settlements were abandoned, but others figured out a way. Ancestors of the Cinque Terre residents used the rugged terrain of this region to their advantage. Building their houses close together and often carving them into the cliffs, they felt protected.
One such interesting example is the village of Vernazza and its Doria castle. It was built in the 15th century, along with a watchtower nicknamed "Belforte", which literally translates as "the place of loud screams". As the soldiers guarding the watchtower noticed a pirate ship on the horizon, they would scream loudly, warning the residents of an imminent pirate attack. An early warning gave the residents an opportunity to seek shelter. Usually, they would climb the steep stairs of Vernazza streets and enter the Doria castle and its formidable walls. The development of reliable firearms and the construction of more watchtowers along the Italian coast finally ended the pirate threat in the mid-17th century. Today, we can marvel at the ingenuity and resilience of these people.
