This day trip was totally worth it because we got to see the beautiful Tuscany, try some local food and wine, and learn a lot from our guide. My husband and I loved walking through the streets in the city center and seeing their beautiful old houses. The guide told us a lot about Siena's culture and their famous horse race. It was the perfect day in Siena, and I'm already thinking of moving there!
The trip was well-organized, and the guide was really good at her job. She showed us all around the city, was interesting to listen to, and showed us where to try some local food. We also had lunch in a winery, where I got to try some amazing local cheese, cured meats, and some Tuscan wine. A great plus is that you also get to see Pisa and San Gimignano, so this trip was worth every euro!

GO BACK IN TIME
What makes Siena a great place to visit is the medieval character it managed to keep. This is because not many construction projects took place in the 16th century, and most modern buildings are located outside the city walls. The historic center is filled with old buildings and narrow, winding streets in between.
TRY THE FAMOUS CHIANTI WINE
There are a few different types of Chianti. The Classico is the most famous one, produced between Florence and Siena. The "Colli Senesi" type is produced on the hills around Siena. The Florence to Siena Day Trip includes a visit to a winery on your way to Siena, so you will have the chance to try this famous Tuscan wine and some local food. Try some panforte, a local delicacy made with dried fruits and nuts, similar to panettone.
FINE ITALIAN ARCHITECTURE & ART
There is a large square called the Piazza del Campo. It is famous for horse races that date back to the Medieval times called Corsa del Palio or Course of the Banner, which the riders race for. They are held two times per year, in July and August, and they started all the way back in 1232! You can see the Palazzo Pubblico or the Public Palace from the 13th century here, the seat of the civil government. Many masterpieces from local painters adorn the interior, such as Simone Martini's "Maestà'' and works by Ambrogio Lorenzetti. Very noticeable in the town is the Mangia Tower, the bell tower located to the side of the Public Palace.

MORE THAN JUST VISITING SIENA
The Florence to Siena Day Trip also takes you to Pisa, where you can help hold up the leaning tower in your photos. You can also add tickets to the tower. After that, you will visit San Gimignano, one of the best-preserved Italian medieval towns, known for its 14 towers. There were once 72, but most fell due to insecure foundations.

Ties with Rome and Spain
According to legend, Siena was founded by Senio and Ascanio, sons of Remus and nephews of Romulus, founders of Rome. They brought the symbol of the she-wolf who nurtured Romulus and Remus to Siena, which became the city's symbol.
The town surrendered to the Spanish in 1555, and two years later, the Spanish king gave the city to Florence. In 1861, Siena and the rest of Tuscany became part of the Kingdom of Italy.
