Amazing visit to Florence Duomo

I enjoy visiting Florence because there are always so many attractions to see. This time around, I spent time exploring the amazing cathedral of the Santa Maria del Fiore complex. I climbed Giotto's Bell Tower and Brunelleschi's Dome to admire the views of the city. Later, I went to see the Santa Reparata remains and the Museum of the Dome. Florence is the most beautiful city in Europe, and I can't wait to come back!

INSIDE THE MAIN FEATURE OF FLORENTINE SKYLINE

The first thing every visitor to Florence notices is the magnificent Brunelleschi's Dome. Commissioned by the ruler Cosimo I de' Medici and designed by the architect Filippo Brunelleschi, it was completed in 1436. At the time of its completion, it was the biggest dome in the world. Today, almost 600 years later, it is still in the top 20! Climbing the Dome is a rewarding hike, as it offers staggering views of the city. Inside, you will have the opportunity to admire the ceiling, which is completely painted and is the largest mural in the world. It depicts scenes from the Book of Revelation, which is a part of the New Testament. Named The Last Judgment, it draws inspiration from the Bible along with Dante's Divine Comedy. The composition of the mural is divided by concentric circles. The lowest circle features horrors and the torments of hell, while the upper circles feature Jesus, the Virgin Mary, and angels. In a symbolic sense, the whole mural is about the redemption of humankind. There are many interesting details within the mural, and we urge you to take pleasure in discovering them. You will have the chance to do so because Brunelleschi Dome tickets are included in this offer!

SANTA MARIA DEL FIORE – LAYERS OF HISTORY

The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore is another attraction included in the Duomo Florence Tickets. Its construction began on the site of an earlier cathedral, the Basilica of Santa Reparata. In medieval times, Italian city-states were competing with each other for the most prominent place. Having the biggest cathedral was a matter of prestige. It was also a multi-generational project, and it took more than a century to complete Santa Maria del Fiore. Once it was finished, it was the biggest cathedral in Europe, with room for 30,000 worshippers. But that wasn't good enough for the ambitious Florentines. Their cathedral was also supposed to be built in a completely new manner. As a result of that effort, a new style emerged - we now know it as the Renaissance! Among the building’s significant features are its stained-glass windows and its ornate green, red, and white marble facade, which is decorated with numerous statues.

GIOTTO'S BELL TOWER – MADE BY THE FATHER OF RENAISSANCE ART

Duomo Florence Tickets include a visit to Giotto's Bell Tower. Made using white, red, and green marble, it is the work of Giotto di Bondone. He was a painter and an architect who is considered to be the father of Renaissance art. By abandoning previous two-dimensional Byzantine stylizations, he created a more realistic approach in his frescoes and paintings. As one of the most distinguished artists in late medieval Italy, he was commissioned to oversee the construction of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. He also provided the plan for the bell tower and started the construction in 1334. Unfortunately, he managed to finish only the first levels of the tower before he died three years later. The work was continued by Andrea Pisano and then Francesco Talenti, who completed the building in 1359. Today, it is one of the landmarks of the Florentine skyline, and you may climb its steps to enjoy views from the top.

THE OPERA DEL DUOMO MUSEUM – THE ORIGINAL SCULPTURES

Situated near the cathedral on the Piazza del Duomo is a museum that is well worth your visit. The Museo dell'Opera del Duomo can be translated from Italian as the Museum of the Works of the Cathedral. Some of the more famous artwork inside includes Donatello's wood-carved Penitent Magdalene, the original bronze Gates of Paradise made by Ghiberti, the marble sculpture The Deposition by Michelangelo, and many others. Did you know that this building was once used as a sculpture workshop? Many of the famous statues were created right here, such as Michelangelo's David! The museum also holds significant collections of late medieval and early Renaissance paintings, along with priceless illuminated manuscripts, liturgical textiles, and reliquaries of saints. Don't miss the chance to see it all with the Duomo Florence tickets!
